Summer is finally settling in Barcelona and it is the time for the Festa Major! If you want to experiment Catalan traditions, this is it. Every year, this “Big Party” is taking place, and this year it is from the 13th until the 22nd of July, so 9 days of party. The festas major are happening every year in each neighborhood of Barcelona, at different dates. Poble Sec one offers different activities all along the week. Let’s discover the agenda!
First day (13th of July) is the opening, with the Consell de Cultura Popular, through a walk around the area and speeches. When the night falls, you can admire fireworks show to finish the day.
Second day (14th of July), meet the Geganters, the Giants of Poble Sec, on the Plaça Santa Madrona, around 18.00. They will execute a traditional dance. This is a typical show of these Festa Major. You can also reach carrer Marta and Piquer, right behind our familial hotel in Poble Sec the Castellers of Poble Sec. The castellers are building human towers and it is impressive. You can observe the different stage of the construction, with a basis formed with the stronger men to the top of the tower, when the youngest of the crew climbs to do the crown. Two pure Catalan shows for this day, that you can end up in the Jardins de Fabià Puigserver by enjoying concerts.
The third day (15th of July) you can enjoy different spectacles and family activities, especially on Plaça Santa Madrona, with a children spectacle and a workshop «Pintamos y jugamos».
And, when the night falls, on the Travpelles de Sant Antoni, go see the Correfoc de Diablons, the Devil of Festa Major. This tradition is also called the fire run.
All along the week you can enjoy activities, from concert, to workshop or traditional Catalan activities. Don’t be surprised to see the neighbors eating in the streets, this festivity is convivial.
You are in a great area to celebrate, especially with the Carrer Blai, famous for its numerous tapas bar and top drinks.
